ABOUT – Balanced K9 Training

ABOUT US

A team of passionate qualified trainers, working with all types of dogs in Melbourne’s Yarra valley.

Our Approach

We recognize no two dogs are the same. All dogs learn differently, therefore the method and tools used will be tailored to your dog’s individual needs. We predominately use positive reinforcement when building foundations for obedience and desired behaviours. Once those foundations are built, we utilize training tools (i.e., correction chain, slip collar, e collar) to hold the dog accountable, and to maintain reliability under a range of distractions.
We strongly believe to effectively communicate with our dogs, we must provide information clearly. To do this it’s important to not only show the dog what we want, (taught through clear marker systems “yes” & clicker training i.e., positive reinforcement) but also what we don’t want from the dog, (taught through consequences).

My journey, how I got my spark and love for dog training.

Hi everyone, my name is Diamond, I am an NDTF qualified dog trainer, with over 10 years experience working in the dog training industry. I am always searching for ways to expand my knowledge, so I can provide the most updated techniques to not only my own dogs, but also my growing client base. I hope to not only educate, but also inspire those around me to do better with their dogs, because after all they are our best friends.

Johnny’s Story

I still remember the first day I met our first family dog Johnny the little sheltie (also known as a Shetland sheep dog). Johnny was the definition of the perfect family dog. He was loving, soft and gentle natured and loved to please. I remember rushing home from school every day just so I could spend hours training him to do fancy new tricks like spin, roll over, shake, weave and “speak”. I didn’t know it yet but those simple commands I was teaching for fun would one day become part of my career. 17 wonderful years I had with this dog by my side R.I.P Johnny.

Kelly’s Story

It wasn’t long after we purchased Johnny that a second Sheltie joined our family. Kelly had the sweetest nature but was also full of sass! Kelly loved a good stroll around the neighbourhood and was very much a lap dog. 12 years I had this beautiful soul in my life R.I.P Kelly

Duane’s Story

Little Duane had my heart from the moment he was born. He was such a happy little dog that was ball and food obsessed and loved a good cuddle. Due to his food and toy obsession, he was a dream to train, just like his dad Johnny. I made many training mistakes with Duane and to this day I promised myself that I wouldn’t make it with future clients. However, I’m thankful that I made these mistakes and that I could learn and grow from them. Two biggest mistakes I made were taking him to dog parks, allowing him to be bullied by other dogs. Secondly, using a face halter to control his walking. Both mistakes turned him into a reactive mess towards other dogs in his later years. Morel of the story is mistakes help us grow, when we know better, we do better.

I didn’t realise it till later in Duane’s life that he would be assisting me with my NDTF course. With the help of Duane I passed my course and received my dog training Diploma, which I will forever be grateful for.

At around the age of 10 we had Duane re homed for safety reasons. When my partner moved in so did his husky Kimber and unfortunately it wasn’t a good match. It was easily one of the hardest decisions of my life, but deep down, I know it was the right thing to do.

He went to the most loving family, and to this day I will forever be grateful for them for spoiling him throughout his remaining senior years and even made sure he had some new dog friends to live with. They stayed in contact with us right up till the day he passed. R.I.P Duane. Forever loved by so many.

Kaiser’s Story

I don’t even know where to start with this dog other than he was my true soul dog. Kaizer was my first husky; I still remember the day I conned dad into driving me 45 minutes away to just go “look” at him. From the single moment we saw him we fell in love and from that day on he was ours. He was my absolute best friend. We did everything together.

He was not only my best friend, but also a best friend to Johnny, Duane, and Kelly in his younger years and in his later years to Snow, Stark, Kimber, Zeus, Boss and Fury. He was that dog that every single dog looked up to and every single person loved. He was that dog I could rely on to teach new young pup’s social skills. He was that dog I could take for hours hiking in the high country. He was that dog that had a goofy smile no matter what. He was that dog that was always there for me. He was that dog you could cuddle with for hours in the bed. He was that dog that had a heart of gold. He was that dog that broke my heart and left to soon.

Kaiser had an accident that resulted in him shattering his ACL, he fought hard through the complications after surgery, and we lost him. I learnt a lot through this horrible time, lessons that I pass onto my own clients, so they don’t make the same mistakes I did.

R.I.P my best friend

Snow’s Story

Snow our second husky joined the family not long after Kaiser. Snow had a rough start to life; she was a backyard bred dog and living conditionings were not that great. Snow was already one year old when we purchased her, another lesson learnt, rescue dogs can come with a-lot of baggage. When she first arrived at our home it took her a few months to truly settle in. She eventually settled in and had multiple dogs to keep her company, Kaiser, Duane, Zeus and Kimber. Snow also helped me pass a section of my dog training course which I’ll forever be grateful for. I could see Snow needed more; she needed more stimulation than what any of my other dogs had needed.

This was the turning point for myself. This was the part where I started to realise, I wanted to learn more about dog training and push myself to further my skills and in turn help my own dogs grow to their full potential. Snow was an extremely intelligent dog, and I quickly realised she was outsmarting my skills and knowledge at the time.

I put a lot of work into training this dog over many years she filled my life with happiness and showed me the true joy training could bring. Unfortunately, our living situation changed, and Snow become stressed by the new environment in which my partner and I were living, she began escaping the yard multiple times a day and nothing we did could keep her contained. Living in a rental made it extremely hard as we were restricted on changes we could make to the fencing and home itself.

It was then I realised Snow needed to be rehomed to someone that was always home and could fulfil her needs mentally and physically. I don’t keep in contact with her new owners, but we knew this was the right decision at the time.

Zeus’s Story

Zeus’s time with us was short, gone way too soon due to severe health issues at the age of 12 months, right heart failure and liver failure. I will never forget the day we had to make the decision to put him to sleep. Zeus was my first extra-large breed dog, Rottweiler x Mastiff, even though he was big he was such a gentle soul. Zeus had been to multiple homes and sent back to the shelter due to severe mouthing which was mistaken as aggression.

We decided to take him on, and it was the best decision we had made. It didn’t take long for us to address the mouthing and move onto bigger and better things. I wish our time could have been longer, but I will be forever grateful for the time we had.

Stark’s Story

My time with Stark was short, he was a shared dog with an ex-partner who now belongs to him. He was my first German shepherd x Husky and for the short time my heart was filled with so much joy. It was the first time I was able to use my knowledge from my dog training course on a young puppy. He has a place in my heart always.

Kimber’s Story

The best way to describe Kimber is she is one tough b*tch! This dog has been my biggest challenge. When my partner moved in, Kimber (his dog) moved in too. Kimber had a great life growing up before moving in with me, however growing up on a farm and being spoilt didn’t do her many favours. Moving in with me meant there were rules and that she had to learn how to live in a large group of dogs. Also being a resource guarder brought many challenges and lifestyle changes. She quickly became attached to Kaiser and Snow both being huskies. Duane on the other hand had too soft of a personality to be living with such a highly driven dog.

This is when we realised, we had to re home Duane for his safety. As Kimber matured over the years and with some long-term training her attitude improved. For years she would come along with me to clients and help build other dogs’ confidence. She would assist with rehab of dogs with reactivity issues and dog aggression. Kimber is now living the retired life alongside the rest of the pack, Fury, Chevy, and Boss. She enjoys coming on adventures with the family up in the high country and lazing around for hours on her bed. Love you girly, thanks for being your sassy self and keeping me on my toes.

Boss’s Story

Mr Boss is my working line Rottweiler. I am extremely grateful for this dog; he is the dog that pushed me to become the advanced handler I am today. His genetics allowed me to flourish with my own handling skills, he has by far been the easiest of all my dogs to train in all aspects. He has an intense love for the ball (sometimes I think he loves it more than me). He loves to please and has a strong work ethic which are the qualities that make him such an amazing dog.

He loves a good cuddle and snores worse than my partner. He’s the definition of perfect. I have worked my arse off on this dogs training and so proud of the dog he is today. Love you Mr Boss!

Fury’s Story

Fury aka Fluffy, is my lifestyle dog, meaning I enjoy the time I have with him through lifestyle training. We enjoy off lead hikes on a regular basis, four wheel driving up to the high country, camping and exploring new places.

Fury enjoys trick training, massages and going for long runs. Our relationship comes easy that’s what I love most about him. I love having a dog that’s the dog version of myself. Love you little buddy! Thanks for being you.

Chevy’s Story

Little Chevy is my second soul dog. After the recent passing of Kaiser, I believe Chevy was sent to me from him to fill the giant hole that Kaizer left in my heart. The day I met Chevy, I knew it was meant to be. He was the first pup to come running round the corner straight into my legs. I told his breeder that I’m taking him and threw the dollars at her before she could say no.

This dog has got a personality like no other, he has got the quirkiest traits and I absolutely love that about him. I’m loving every second of my training journey with him and have documented it all so other clients can learn along the way and hopefully apply to their own dogs. I have put every bit of education I have learnt over the years into this dogs training to make him the absolute best version of himself that I can. Love you Chev! Here’s to years of more adventures to come.
.

Every one of these dogs has helped me grow and develop not only as a trainer but also as a person. When I hear people tell me their stories, I can say I have been there too. I have felt the pain. I have felt the frustration. I have felt the love, the joy, and everything that comes along with owning a dog.

Every one of these dogs has helped turn my passion and love for dogs into a career.
